Assam Artists Declares Solidarity

Shocked by the unfortunate developments in the Faculty of Fine Arts, Baroda, artists and intellectual from Assam registered their protest in a meeting held at the Artists Guild, Guwahati. A report.

Artists from the Northern India region came to Guwahati, Assam on 14th May 2007 at 6 pm to express their solidarity with the protesting artists fraternity in Baroda. The protest meet was jointly organized by the State Art Gallery, The Government College of Arts and Crafts, The Guwahait Artists Guild, Assam Fine Arts and Crafts Society, Jorhat Fine Arts and Crafts Society.

The protest meeting was held at the Guwahati Artists Guild premises. Artists came in groups and painted posters and placards. Artist Kishore Das, an alumnus of Faculty of Fine Arts, Baroda presented the case before the artists and read out the memorandum, which was later signed by the artists. The memorandum expressed the concern of the artists from the Northern Region on the Baroda incident. They condemned the vandalism of the right wing fundamentalists. They demanded protection for Chandramohan and also demanded immediate reinstatement of the suspended Acting Dean Dr.Shivji Panikkar.

The memorandum signed by the artists and intellectuals will be sent to the Vice Chancellor of the M.S.University, Baroda. Intellectuals and artists spoke on the occasion and they all expressed grief and concern over the unhappy incidents happened during the last week in the Fine Arts Faculty, Baroda. They said that they would stand together and continue their fight for justice and peace.
